Supporting Babies’ Self-Determination

In this practical and inspiring workshop, we will explore what self-determination looks like in babyhood, why it matters, and how everyday interactions, routines, and environments in nurseries can nurture babies’ autonomy and emotional development.

Self-determination is founded on the idea that babies are full human beings with the right to make choices and express preferences, even before they can speak. For babies, self-determination shows up in gestures, movements, sounds, eye contact and actions that communicate what matters to them — from the toys they reach for, to when and how they want comfort or engagement.

Key Takeaways

  • Work with real scenarios from the baby room
  • Develop actionable strategies to meaningfully foster babies’ self-determination
  • Strengthen practice that supports babies’ emotional and social wellbeing and development
