AIMH UK Spring Workshop 2026

The Stories that Make us: Applying the Meaning of the Child Interview (MotC) in Parent-Infant Practice

Wednesday 18th March, 9:30 to 1pm online

The Meaning of the Child Interview (MotC) is a reflective approach for understanding parent-child relationships through the stories parents tell about their children.

Led by Dr Ben Grey, developer of the MotC and author of the newly released The Meaning of the Child Interview:‘Making Sense of Parent Child Relationships’ this workshop will outline the basic principles of the MotC and illustrate it’s use in clinical practice with parents and infants.

Grounded in attachment theory, the MotC views parent-infant relationships as a relational dance shaped by how parents interpret and respond to their baby’s signals of alarm or distress.

This workshop introduces the MotC and explores how parental meanings and narratives can either create distance or foster closeness in parent–baby relationships.

The MotC can be learned and used without a specific academic or professional background. It has been taught internationally to professionals across disciplines, including social work, family support, occupational therapy, psychotherapy, psychology and psychiatry.

This workshop will outline the basic principles of the MotC and illustrate it’s use in clinical practice with parents and infants.  It will be led by Dr Ben Grey, developer of the MotC and author of the newly released The Meaning of the Child Interview:  Making Sense of Parent Child Relationships.  There will be workshop contributions from therapists using the MotC in varying approaches and contexts.  The morning will include:

  • An introduction to using the MotC
  • The meaning of the infant in the couple relationship
  • The application of the MotC in practice with parents and infants

The workshop will offer case examples, interview excerpts and videos to show how the approach can offer a practice path based on understanding parents’ perceptions of their infants.

Workshop Programme of the day – timings to be confirmed shortly.
